The beginnings

From an early age, I always wanted to travel and see more of our great country. My husband and I had our kids fairly young, but we always imagined that we would still follow that dream and pack the kids up and travel this awesome country of ours. Recently, we sat down and had a good chat about the idea, and realised that if we didn't start actively planning for it, it would actually never happen. Either that, or by the time we got around to doing it, the kids would be in high school and would need more stability in their schooling. The more we thought about it, the more we thought that we were more likely to regret not doing it, than to regret doing it! So began the planning.

Matt has now given his notice at work, I have sold my home based business, and I have started organising home schooling options and thinking about places we want to go. I really can't believe how quickly it all started to come together once we actually sat down and decided that this is what we are going to do. It still feels a bit surreal, and we have a lot of planning to go, but we are actually going to do this!! I'm sure we will get plenty of comments about how crazy we are to give up great jobs to just go flitting off, but we are confident that our decision is right for us. Although it can be hard to express that to people at times, especially when they just think you are mad!

We are already set up for camping, and have a really nice, easy to set up camper trailer that will get us into most rough places we want to go. We have a 4WD with all the bits and pieces we need, roof rack, snorkel, lift kit etc. So the plan is to just pack up and head off in around 3 months! Here is a pic of the set up we have :-)

I have been searching the internet for as much information as we can possibly find about travelling the country with kids, and have found some really helpful info, but there are still so many decisions I have to make, which type of home schooling, will we be happy in the camper trailer or will we need to upgrade to a van, will we need a more reliable car etc... It all starts to get a bit complicated so we think we will just use what we have for now, and if we need to make changes to our car or caravan, we can look into that later on. The main thing is that we just get out on the road.

I think one of the main things I am looking forward to will be the time spent together as a family. Living in the city and working makes it hard at times, as we all seem to be so busy with life in general. I'm sure we will drive each other crazy at times, but it will be great to just spend time together without all the pressures of day to day life, just travel around the country and learn and grow together.

I'm going to keep this blog as a record of our travels, and discuss different things that may have proved challenging for us, so that hopefully others can benefit from our experiences :-)

Until next time, ciao!
